Chess Olympiad 2026: Official schedule released, India faces challenge right in Samarkand

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has officially announced the schedule for the 46th Chess Olympiad, to be held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan from September 1 to 14, 2026. This year's event is particularly significant as India – the defending champion in both the Open and Women's sections – must defend its throne on the home turf of the rising Uzbekistan, where young star Javokhir Sindarov, who will challenge Gukesh D. for the World Championship title later this year, resides. According to FIDE's announcement, the tournament will use the Swiss system with 11 rounds for both sections. A notable point in the schedule is the arrangement of the first 6 rounds taking place consecutively from September 1 to 6, followed by a single rest day before the final 5 rounds from September 8 to 12. The final round will start at 11:00 AM instead of the usual 3:00 PM to accommodate the closing ceremony on the same day. This decision by FIDE has received consensus from many teams, as playing 6 consecutive days demands high physical fitness and concentration, especially for top players who must balance the tournament with preparation plans for subsequent major events.
